Volvo Car Show mode: Known Issues & Limitations

Follow the checklist below if Show mode fails to start;

  1. Make sure the power supply is connected before plugging in the Show mode controller. The controller checks the car voltage during start-up and does not start if it is not connected to the charger or if the voltage is too low.
  2. The car must be completely turned off before inserting the Show mode controller.
  3. Observe the LED’s on the controller during start-up and verify to the list below;
    1. Connect / reconnect the controller in the OBD port of the car.
    2. Start-up phase, LEDs are flashing the software version;
      LED A: version number, green->blue->green flash, sequence see below.
      LED B: green = official version (blue = for e.g. pre-production cars and tests)We now flash the complete version number, i.e. all 3 digits in e.g. v9.3.2

      LED A:
      4 flashes per version digit, with a small pause between.
      In binary format, e.g. 9 = 1001b = long, short, short, long flash
      1st digit – 4 green flashes
      2nd digit – 4 blue flashes
      3rd digit – 4 green flashes

      Ex. v9.3.2
      4 green: 9 = 1001b = long, short, short, long
      4 blue: 3 = 0011b = short, short, long, long
      4 green: 2 = 0010b = short, short, long, short

    3. After the version number phase, both LEDA and LED B will go out, i.e. when LED B goes out, the entire version number has flashed.When the controller then tries to communicate with the car, LED A will flash slowly blue, if it does not connect with the car.
    4. Show mode active LED A or LED B is flashing every five seconds (battery voltage is ok).

Low voltage, 12V battery
If LED A and B is flashing blue every 20 seconds after pre start-up phase this indicates low voltage. The controller will continue to check the battery voltage every 30 minutes and will start Show mode as soon as the voltage is ok (above 12.5V).
If Show mode has started and battery voltage becomes low this is first indicated by LED A and B flashing red every five seconds during the first minute. If the voltage is still low the controller shuts down Show mode, LED A and B flashes blue and restart is tried after 30 minutes.

Low voltage, High voltage battery
If the high voltage battery SOC drops to low (approximately 15%, depending on battery model and make) the controller will shut down Show mode and will not try to restart automatically. This state is indicated by continuous flashing on both LED A and B with red light.

48V battery
If the SOC on the 48V battery on mild hybrids drops to low, Show mode will initiate a charging process where the 48V battery is charged from the 12V side. .

Wrong mode
If the car is already in Active or Driving mode (by using the car key) when the controller is installed the controller will enter a waiting mode. The LED A or B will flash with green to indicate power is ok but will not enter the initialization phase (with blue flashing).

Sometimes the Show mode system shuts down and the car goes to sleep, why is this happeing?

There are several reasons why this can happen, to start the system again just unplug and reconnect the Show mode controller in the OBD port then check for possible reasons from the list below;

  • If the car has been started with a car key present the Show mode controller has stopped working, To restart the Show mode controller, remove the key from the car, unplug the controller and reconnect it again.
  • If the Show mode controller detects a low voltage signal from the car it shuts down the Show mode system to protect the car battery. Check that the battery charger is the one supplied with the Show mode system. Take a picture of the DIM in the car during Show mode startup. The 12V system voltage is shown in this picture. If the voltage is below 13.5V Show mode will not start.

Can the engine be started in show mode?

No the engine start is blocked and the parking brake is always engaged.

I connected everything but the car does not wake up, what can be the reasons?

Check the following things first;

  1. The most common reason is that the Show mode battery charger is not connected. Make sure it is connected before connecting the Show mode controller. Disconnect and reconnect the Show mode controller.
  2. If the battery was discharged it might take some time for the charger to raise the voltage to 13.5 V that is required for the Show mode controller to start. Check the battery voltage or just let the charger work an hour before reconnecting the Show mode controller again.
  3. If there is still no luck? See the Where can I get help section below.

Note! EUCD cars as well as V40, V40CC are no longer supported from version 6.0 and onwards.
